The sun is shining, the air is warm, and summer is just around the corner. Baby Girl and Friend are running through the house looking for a picnic basket... A few moments later I hear thunderous footsteps and excited girlhood chatter as they emerge with a basket as big as they are...
Hmmm.... an idea begins to form... When they were little I used to change their toys out periodically to keep them interested in revisiting their toy shelves. I think this summer I'll keep the basket out and change the contents every few days to keep the summer blahs away...
Sidewalk chalk, bubbles, pinwheels, a new book, friendship bracelet kits, craft materials, jigsaw puzzles, a deck of cards, a bug jar, science experiments, seeds, marbles...
In the basket, also, will be a journal with notes of inspiration: look for a four leaf clover today, make a daisy chain, pick and press fresh flowers, plant seeds, grow a garden, climb a new tree, create a new hide-out, find surprises in the clouds, bake cookies, have a lemonade stand, look for fairies, star gaze, catch fireflies , camp out, make home-made boats to float in the creek, play Mother May I?, 1, 2, 3, Red Light , the list is as endless as childhood's summer days are long ...
Lastly, of course, I'll add a picnic blanket, hugs, kisses, and best wishes for a magical summer full of adventure...
Oh. . . and don't forget to include rock school on the steps. What a wonderful way to begin the summer. . . did you go to school with my Mom? Sounds like something she would have done.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your visit..
ReplyDeleteBeautiful words and pictures that capture summer...

Beautiful post; I love Khalil Gibran, BTW!
ReplyDeleteThank you guys so much :) Y'all are sweet. I absolutely love your blogs! Rock school? Good idea....
ReplyDeleteThanks for finding my blog because I am now so happy to find your blog...it appears you may be a girl of my own heart. L&D nurse, quote lover, and you seem like a generous spirit...nice blog! I saw the Kahlil Gibran quote and Oscar Wilde quotes and thought I must follow you now too!
ReplyDeleteIt was an honor and it was humbling to find the comment you left for me today on my blog. I will keep your request in my prayers. It is interesting that while we don't always know what God's best is, He always shows up right on time.
ReplyDeleteOn another note, I so enjoy coming to your blog and reading the quotes, poetry and happenings at Mops and Pops place. It has revived traces of my Mom and I do so miss those traces! So, I cannot find words enough to spell the gratitude that comes from reading your posts. I trust that you will somehow just feel that sweet presence in the breeze or catch a glimpse of the love she gave me through the wings of a butterfly or the seedlings that ride the wind from a dandelion. Thanks for participating in my life as you read through my stories. Very truly a kindred spirit to me.
This post made me go back to my summer days as a young child, when life was simpler, slower, and time seemed to stand still. Playing outside until there were nothing but stars in the sky then coming in filthy dirty to a nice cool bath, a snack and bed. Just to get up the next morning and do it all over again. I too loved to have back yard picnics, make a wish while blowing the cottony dandilions, and making a "princess crown" out of all the yellow dandilions in our yard.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the sweet reminder of those precious childhood memories! Made my heart smile this evening!
Thank you again, guys. You are too sweet...
